Conversation: perotcharts.com has some interesting Charts from Ross Perot about how we use energy and where it comes from. According to his charts, 70 percent of the energy from oil goes into transportation. Roger is playing fast and loose - as much of the transportation energy used from oil is DIESEL FUEL and AVIATION FUEL - not merely "Gasoline". 24% of the oil is used by industry. His point is still somewhat relevant, but it doesn't help to start from a faulty premise.artstone

Conversation: Another significant consumer of transportation energy is railroads. To see one possible view of the future, look at the railroads of South Africa which has to import its oil from a world that was hostile to its government and imposed trade sanctions. South Africa runs many of its trains on electricity generated from coal powered electrical plants and until a few years ago was still using coal fired steam locomotives - which the rest of the world stopped using 50 years ago.artstone
