Another significant consumer of transportation energy is railroads. To see one possible view of the future, look at the railroads of South Africa which has to import its oil from a world that was hostile to its government and imposed trade sanctions. South Africa runs many of its trains on electricity generated from coal powered electrical plants and until a few years ago was still using coal fired steam locomotives - which the rest of the world stopped using 50 years ago.
