Conversation: This whole issue is a bit naive :) Countries don't ship their gold around to each other. They exchange pieces of paper saying who owns the gold inside each other's vaults. Gold is heavy and hard and risky to transport :) The U.S. owns a lot of gold held by the IMF, and likely much of the gold in Fort Knox is pledged to the IMF, but we safeguard it for them.
